What a wonderful God we serve. Continue to delight in Him daily!

Our sincere love to each of you,
The Reschly Family

Why we are closing Adorned with Modesty
As we mentioned in December, through all of our moving we have continued to examine what is good and neccesary for our family. In this examination of priorities and in prayer we have come to the conclusion that the running of Adorned with Modesty would be better given to a family with older children who are able to participate in the activities and share in reaping the benefits. Our hope in opening Adorned with Modesty was that it might be a way to bring Daddy home to work. After review, we realized it is much better suited to training older children in business or as supplementary income.
Our duty is to train our children in the ways of the Lord, what a great honor and gift! We do look forward to the day(many years from now) when Eric will be pastoring and finally be at home to work! :) So, it is with heavy and lightened hearts we announce that Adorned with Modesty will be closing at the end of the month.

If through prayer you feel this shop/ ministry would suit your family well, please see the side panel on the left for more information. Also, we will be continuing to write books and ebooks for the family. We find our family is blessed through our work on books and compilations which we can work at as we have time. Our family publishing company is A Godly Legacy Publishing. If you have had in mind to purchase a copy of Proverbs to Live By Paperdolls, or would like to continue to hear from our family on a quarterly basis, please see the note on the side about A Godly Legacy Publishing. With thankfulness for all of you who have made our work on Adorned with Modesty a pleasure, we say goodbye.

The Practice of Piety-
a Puritan devotional manual, directing a Christian how to live, that he may please God
How to Begin the Morning with Pious Meditations and Prayer
by Lewis Bayly (1611)
As soon as ever you awake in the morning, keep the door of your heart fast shut, that no earthly thought may enter, before God comes in; and let him, before all others, have the first place there. So all evil thoughts either will not dare to come in, or shall the easier be kept out; and the heart will more savor of piety and godliness all the day after. But if your heart be not, at your first waking, filled with some meditations of God and his word, and dressed, like the lamp in the tabernacle (Exod 27:20-21), every morning and evening, with the oil-olive of God's word, and perfumed with the sweet incense of prayer (Exod 30:6-7), Satan will attempt to fill it with worldly cares or fleshly desires, so that it will grow unfit for the service of God all the day after, sending forth nothing but the stench of corrupt and lying words, and of rash and blasphemous thoughts.
Begin, therefore, every day's work with God's word and prayer; and offer up to God upon the altar of a contrite heart, the groans of your spirit, and the calves of your lips, as your morning sacrifice, and the first fruits of the day (Psalm 51:17; Rom 8:22; Hos 13:2; Psalm 130:6;) and as soon as you awake say to him thus:
My soul waits on you, O Lord, more than watchmen watch for the morning! O God, therefore be merciful unto me, and bless me, and cause your face to shine upon me! Fill me with your mercy this morning, so shall I rejoice and be glad all my days.
Meditations for the Morning.
1. The Almighty God can, in the resurrection, as easily raise up your body out of the grave, from the sleep of death, as he has this morning wakened you in your bed, out of the sleep of nature. At the dawning of which resurrection day, Christ shall come to be glorified in his saints; and everyone of the bodies of the thousands of his saints, being fashioned like unto his glorious body, shall shine as bright as the sun (2 Thess 1:10; Jude 14; Phil 3:21; Luke 9:31;) all the angels shining likewise in their glory; the body of Christ surpassing them all in splendor and glory; and the Godhead excelling it. If the rising of one sun makes the morning sky so glorious, what a bright shining and glorious morning will that be, when so many thousand thousands of bodies, far brighter than the sun, shall appear and accompany Christ as his glorious train, coming to keep his general session of righteousness, and to judge the wicked angels, and all ungodly men (Acts 17:31; 1 Cor 6:3; Jude 15;) and let not any transitory profit, pleasure, or vain glory of this day, cause you to lose your part and portion of the eternal bliss and glory of that day, which is properly termed the resurrection of the just (Luke 14:14.) Beasts have bodily eyes to see the ordinary light of the day: but you endeavor with the eyes of faith, to foresee the glorious light of that day.
2. You know not how near, the evil spirit which night and day, like a roaring lion, walks about seeking to devour you (1 Pet 5:8; Job 1:7) was to you while you were asleep and not able to help yourself; and you know not what mischief he would have done to you, had not God hedged you and your with his ever-waking Providence, and guarded you with his holy and blessed angels (Job 1:10; Psalm 121:4; Psalm 34:7; Gen 32:1-2; 2 Kings 6:16.)
3. If you hear the cock crow, remember Peter, to imitate him (Luke 22:61-62;) and call to mind that cock-crowing sound of the last trumpet, which shall waken you from the dead. And consider in what case you were, if it sounded now, and become such as you would then wish to be; lest at that day you should wish that you had never seen this; yes, curse the day of your natural birth, for lack of being newborn by spiritual grace (Jer 20:14; Job 3:1; Titus 3:5.) When the cock crows the thief despairs of his hope, and gives over his night's enterprise: so the devil ceases to tempt, or attempt any further, when he hears the devout soul wakening herself with morning prayer.
4. Remember that Almighty God is about your bed, and sees your down-lying, and your uprising; understands your thoughts, and is acquainted with all your ways (Psalm 139:2-3.) Remember likewise that his holy angels, who guarded and watched over you all night, does also behold how you wake and rise (Gen 31:55; Gen 32:1-2.) Do all things, therefore, as in the solemn presence of God, and in the sight of his holy angels (Psalm 91:5,11; Acts 12:11.)
5. As you are putting on your apparel, remember that they were first given as coverings of shame, being the effects of sin; and that they are made but of the offals of dead beasts. Therefore, whether you respect the clothes, you have so little cause to be proud of them, that you have great cause to be humbled at the sight and wearing of them, seeing the richest apparel are but fine covers of shame. Meditate rather, that as your apparel serves to cover your shame, and to fence your body from cold, so you should be as careful to cover your soul with that wedding garment which is the righteousness of Christ (because apprehended by our faith), called the righteousness of the saints (Matt 22:11; Rom 13:14; 1 Cor 1:30; Phil 3:9; Rev 19:8; Eph 4:24;) lest, while we are richly appareled in the sight of men, we be not found to walk naked (so that all our filthiness be seen) in the sight of God (Rev 16:15.) But that with his righteousness, as with a robe, we may cover ourselves from perpetual shame; and shield our souls from that fiery cold that will procure eternal weeping, and gnashing of teeth (Matt 22:13.) And withal consider how blessed a people were our nation, if every silken suit did cover a sanctified soul. And yet a man would think, that on whom God bestowed most of these outward blessings, of them he should receive greatest inward thanks (Luke 12:48.) But if it proves otherwise, their reckoning will prove the heavier in the day of their accounts.
6. Consider how God's mercy is renewed unto you every morning, in giving you, as it were, a new life (Lam 3:23; Psalm 19:5), and in causing the sun, after his incessant race, to rise again to give you light. Let not, then, this glorious light burn in vain; but precede rather (as oft as you can) the sun rising to give God thanks (Luke 12:48;) and kneeling down at your bedside, salute him at the dayspring with some devout morning soliloquy: containing a humble confession of your sins, seeking the pardon of all your faults, a thanksgiving for all his benefits, and a craving of his gracious protection to his church, yourself, and all that belong to you.

March 2008 Newsletter

Adorned with Modesty Newsletter- March 2008

You will notice a different look to this month's newsletter. We are focusing on our joyful duty of serving those within the Body of Christ. We will be talking about those dear to our hearts and many whom we have met through the shop. Please read about our dear brothers and sisters and pray about how you might serve.

Sincerely,
The Reschly Family

Encourage.

Just this past weekend we received an email from a dear sister in Christ that touched our hearts to tears, especially because we have heard from several others who are in the same place. These, our brothers and sisters who love the Lord, are serving with all their are and yet find little support from the local body. Yet with great joy we see the fruits of the daily labors. Is there someone you know whom you might encourage with a note or email today? We have many dear ones whom we would be glad to pass a note onto if you would like to write. Thank you for taking a moment to encourage another family member in Christ.

Pray.

Also, we received the following email from a dear friend we have known for years. This past month we have seen the great grace given to us in prayer and intercession. Consider the needs of those near you and your own family. We have been so humbled and grateful for the prayers which you have given on our behalf through our move and Eric's start in Seminary. Thank you so very much. We ask that you please keep Dustin's family in prayer.

"I thought you would like to read it. Thank you both as I know you will pray hard.------------------------------------------------------------Brittany and I have been up most of the night askingfor prayers from people around the world. Now, I needto ask each one of you to join us.My Son, Joshua, had a heart transplant when he was 19days old. Statistically, he's had a 30% chance of notliving to see his 5th birthday. Now that he has, heonly has a 50% chance of living to see his 10th. Hisodds of surviving have been greatly reduced due toabusive actions by the boys' biological father andwe've been in a 13 month long court battle to try toprotect them from several instances of physical dangeras well as severe emotional harm. This year, Josh hashad at least 8 bouts of pneumonia and 2hospitalizations, missed 6 weeks of his first year ofkindergarten and screams every time a nurse comes nearhim for fear of another needle. Each new illness couldbe the one that has him fighting for his life. Myeight year old son Jacob has been seeing a childtherapist since June and often breaks down in tearsover the things that his father does or tells him. We've spent more than a quarter of my income this yearon attorneys and court costs and $6000 on medicalexpenses, but, by the grace of God, have remained debtfree.I'm not looking for responses to this email, anyrecognition or to become the topic of discussion, but,I'm pleading, for my family's sake, please take a moment today to find a quiet place in your heart to say "God please help Jacob and Joshua."I know that I'm far from a perfect example of what aChristian should be, I'm often negative and coldtowards others. Please know that my family and I haveprayed for you and the needs that I overhear. Ifthere's anything that you need prayer for, please letme know."This is the confidence we have in approaching God:that if we ask anything according to his will, hehears us. And if we know that he hears us - whateverwe ask - we know that we have what we asked of him" (1John 5:14-15)."Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks inall circumstances, for this is God's will for you inChrist Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).Thanks for listening.dustinkraft000@yahoo.com"

Give.

We have met a most wonderful and sweet family through the shop. They have truely been a delight and encouragement to our family. We asked permission to throw a sort of benefit for their family. Here is chance to meet the needs of a godly family. We invite you all to pray and give as the Lord leads.

As I mentioned, the Mowe's have been a joy to our family. Their prayers in my father's illness have meant a great deal to us as well. They have just learned that their daughted is in need of surgury for all four of her wisdom teeth which are impacted. The cost of the surgury was quoted at $3,000.00.

If we all gave from what we have been blessed with, we could make the need nothing and also encourage a lovely family in Christ. We are asking also that you keep Mr. Mowe in your prayers. He has an autoimmune disease that was diagnosed 4 years ago and at present is fighting an upper respiratory infection. Please pray for continued strength.

Please email us at: ericreschly@hotmail.com and we will send you their address. We would also like to extend a free used item or ebook from the shop to anyone who would like to give as our thank you.

Receive.

We wanted also to take this time to remind you of the Dorcas Program. We see our responsiblity to be joyfully obedient to God's word to help the widows and the fatherless. To that end we are glad to offer our Dorcas Program in memory of that beautiful Christian who has long gone to be with the Lord. (You can read about her in the book of Acts.) If you or someone you know is a widow or single mother in need of clothing, please contact us with a list of our products that would help. We will be glad to extend these to you free of charge. We only ask that you pay shipping costs. Thank you so much for your participation.

Relieve.

As the days go by and the girls grow, the more we desire that the shop go to a godly family whom it can benefit. If you have been praying about & considering taking over the shop, but are concerned about the initial cost, please contact us. Our hearts are more concerned about the shop being a benefit to a family than about our earnings. We would not like to close her doors, as there are so very many dear ones whom make her up. Would you consider relieving our family and taking on the joys of this ministry?

Thank you to each of you who daily encourage, pray, give, receive and relieve. Thank you, again, for your prayers for our family. May our Lord bless you as you continue to serve him and his beloved bride, the church.

Sincerely,
The Eric Reschly Family

Looking forward to Home...

Oh, how blessed we feel to be given the chance to own a home here in Pittsburgh. It is our first family home and, in our Lord's will, where expect to see our girls grow up as Eric works his way slowly and steadily through seminary.

As we feel the joy and excitement of settling into a home, we think of the Israelites as they entered the promised land and even more so, our hope of eternal life in the presence of God.

Take some time to warm your affections toward our heavenly substance, as the pleasures of this short lived time in the world are but fleeting vapors.

Featured Product: Whole Wheat Bread Tutorial
We glad to say that a working copy of the tutorial is out. This is going to be a great little booklet. Included will be our family's own recipes for bread, muffins and pizza- all from 100% whole wheat. There are lots of helpful and beautiful photos as well. If your family dislikes the idea of whole wheat, please give these recipes a try for them. We have had so many gracious comments by "white bread lovers" who are grateful for tasty whole wheat breads & pizza. We will also be including a section on tips and our favorite rescources.

We are so thankful to those ladies who are helping us through their comments and questions. We would be happy to have few more families to give their input. You will receive a free copy of the tutorial download. We can only take a few more people, as too many questions would be overwhelming. If you are interested, please contact us at: ericreschly@hotmail.com and ask to be a part to the "Whole Grain Tutorial" project.

THE HAPPY HOME CONTEMPLATED-BEING WITH CHRIST IN GLORY"Father, I will that they also whom you have given me, be with me where I am." John 17:24"So shall we ever be with the Lord." 1 Thes. 4:17 "In those blest regions of delight, Where Jesus is unveiled to sight, No mortal tongue can e'er express The ransomed sinner's blessedness. What mortal pen can describe the glowing beauties of Emmanuel's land! What mortal tongue can express the blessedness of the saints, when gazing upon the heaven-bright glories of Emmanuel's form, and dwelling forever in his glorious presence, under the resplendent beams of the Sun of righteousness! This is what the eye has not seen; what the ear has not heard; what the heart of man has never conceived. But yet this blessedness awaits all the saints, and will abide with them through the incessant flow of eternity's immeasurable ages. O, happy thought!Dear Christian reader, Christ has, in his infinite love, now gone to prepare a place, an endless happy home for you; but he will come again, and receive you to himself. He will not always leave you in this valley of tears. No- when this short life is ended, you will "depart and be with Christ;" you will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Christ will bring you to his Father's house, where his glorious presence is enjoyed without a medium. He will welcome you to the mansions of glory, to the kingdom of heaven. "Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." "Don't be troubled. You trust God, now trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father's home, and I am going to prepare a place for you. If this were not so, I would tell you plainly. When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am."Thus spoke our Savior before he left this world- before he ascended to heaven from Mount Olivet. But there is a day coming, when that same Savior shall break through the clouds of heaven; "when he comes to receive glory and praise from his holy people. And you will be among those praising him on that day, for you believed what we testified about him." Job obtained a glimpse of this day. He starts forward on the wings of faith, and beholds through the lapse of many ages the divine form of his Redeemer. He sees him with his very eyes. "But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and that he will stand upon the earth at last. And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God! I will see him for myself. Yes, I will see him with my own eyes. I am overwhelmed at the thought!" Christ shall come again, to gather his children home, to that place which he has prepared for them. Then shall the word of command, issued from his blessed lips, go forth: "Gather my saints together unto me, those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. "For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the call of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and remain with him forever. So comfort and encourage each other with these words." Then shall we be ever in his presence, where there is fullness and pleasure forever. It is Christ's presence that will make the very heaven of happiness, the very center of felicity. It is being with Christ that will constitute the purest, brightest, noblest heaven. What would heaven be to the saints, did they not enjoy the presence of Christ? It would be no heaven to them, though they were surrounded with the glories of the New Jerusalem. O Blessed Jesus! may we be going up through this wilderness world, leaning upon you; walking by faith; loving and serving you; and may we finally be brought to behold your glorious face in the realms of light, in the paradise above, and be ever with you. "What is the world, but grief and care! What heaven, if you are absent there! Your glorious face illumines the sky,And sheds ecstatic joys on high." It is in the presence of Christ, that we will participate in those pleasures which are at God's right hand. "In your presence is fullness of joy: at your right hand, there are pleasures for evermore." Oh! to be ever with the Lord! What human mind can comprehend the blessedness of such a state? Christ knows this blessedness; and how fervently he prays, "Father, I want these whom you've given me to be with me, so they can see my glory. You gave me the glory because you loved me even before the world began!" This prayer will be answered. We shall soon be with Christ. We shall soon behold his glory. Then shall we see Him as he is; even Him who loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood; who died on Calvary for us; whose blessed hands, and side, and feet were pierced for us; and whose precious blood flowed so freely to wash away our sins- to Him be glory forever! To read the whole work, please click here:

Psalm 96:10-13Say among the nations, The Lord reigns!Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;he will judge the peoples with equity. 11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;let the sea roar, and all that fills it; 12 let the field exult, and everything in it!Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy 13 before the Lord, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Rejoicing in the Judgment of Our God
I often tremble at the thought of the judgment of the Lord. It is right as a sinful man to do so. But it ought not end in trembling but rejoicing. The righteous judge calls all the earth, all nations and even creation to rejoice and exult in the his judgment of the peoples in equity! Oh, family in Christ, rejoice! For the Lord and righteous judge is now reigning over the earth.

Featured Product: Proverbs to Live By Paperdolls I & II

This has been such a joy to practice in our home. It is a great way to spend intimate time with your daughters discussing and learning the proverbs together and what they say regaurding being a godly daughter and mother (book I) and humility (bookII). Each book is in download form so that you may use the booklet as often as you like within your home and print as many dolls as needed for the number of daughters in your home. The cost is $4.75 per booklet.

Some comments on the booklet:

"The questions were wonderful, and I look forward to copying this for my daughter!"

"They are beautiful."

"These are beautiful!! I think they will make a special Sunday activity!!Thanks!"

Since we have put these together we now have a special proverb time each day with the girls. We read a chapter each day and choose a verse to illustrate and color while we memorize that verse. What a joy! We highly recommend it to your family.

For Your Edification:
Calvin's Commentary on Psalm 96

PSALM 96
This psalm contains an exhortation to praise God, an exhortation which is directed not only to the Jews, but to all nations. We must infer from this, that it has reference to the kingdom of Christ. God's name could not be called upon in any other part of the world than Judea, until it had been revealed; and the heathen nations were at that time necessarily altogether incapacitated for any such exercise.
74 Yet it is evident that the Holy Spirit stirred up the saints who were under the Law to celebrate the Divine praises, till the period should arrive when Christ, by the spread of the Gospel, should fill the whole earth with his glory.
Psalm 96:1-3
1. Sing to Jehovah a new song, sing unto Jehovah, all the earth. 2. Sing unto Jehovah, bless his name; show forth his salvation from day to day. 3. Declare his glory among the heathen; his wonders among all people.

1 Sing unto Jehovah a new song This commencement shows that, as I have already observed, the Psalmist is exhorting the whole world, and not the Israelites merely, to the exercise of devotion. Nor could this be done, unless the gospel were universally diffused as the means of conveying the knowledge of God. The saying of Paul must necessarily hold true,
"How shall they call upon him in whom they have not believed?" (Ro 10:14.)
The same Apostle proves the calling of the Gentiles, by adducing in testimony of it, "Praise the Lord, ye Gentiles, with his people" - from which it follows, that fellowship in the faith stands connected with the joint celebration of praise, (Ro 15:11.) Besides, the Psalmist requires a new song, 75 not one which was common, and had formerly been raised. He must therefore refer to some unusual and extraordinary display of the Divine goodness. Thus, when Isaiah speaks of the restoration of the Church, which was wonderful and incredible, he says, "Sing unto the Lord a new song," (Isa 42:10.) The Psalmist intimates accordingly, that the time was come when God would erect his kingdom in the world in a manner altogether unlooked for. He intimates still more clearly as he proceeds, that all nations would share in the favor of God. He calls upon them everywhere to show forth his salvation, and, in desiring that they should celebrate it from day to day, would denote that it was not of a fading or evanescent nature, but such as should endure for ever.

3 Declare his glory among the heathen Additional terms are adduced to commend the salvation spoken of. It is called his glory and his wonders; which is equivalent to saying that it was glorious and admirable. By such titles the Psalmist would distinguish it from any deliverances which had formerly been granted, as indeed there can be but one opinion, that when God appeared as Redeemer of all the world, he gave a display of his mercy and of his favor, such as he never vouchsafed before. This salvation it was impossible, as I have said, that the Gentile nations could have celebrated, had they been left without it. The words teach us that we can never be said to have rightly apprehended the redemption wrought out by Christ, unless our minds have been raised to the discovery of something incomparably wonderful about it.
Psalm 96:4-6

4. For Jehovah is great, and greatly to be praised; he is terrible above all gods.
76 5. For all the gods of the nations are vanities; 77 but Jehovah made the heavens. 6. Strength and honor are before him; power and glory are in his sanctuary.

4. For Jehovah is great, and greatly to be praised. He particularly describes that God, whom he would have men to celebrate, and this because the Gentile nations were prone to merge into error upon this subject. That the whole world might abjure its superstitions, and unite in the true religion, he points out the one only God who is worthy of universal praise. This is a point of the greatest importance. Unless men are restrained by a due respect to it, they can only dishonor him the more that they attempt to worship him. We must observe this order if we would not profane the name of God, and rank ourselves amongst unbelieving men, who set forth gods of their own invention. By gods in the verse may be meant, as I observed already, (Ps 95:3,) either angels or idols. I would still be of opinion that the term comprehends whatever is, or is accounted deity. As God, so to speak, sends rays of himself through all the world by his angels, these reflect some sparks of his Divinity. 78 Men, again, in framing idols, fashion gods to themselves which have no existence. The Psalmist would convince them of its being a gross error to ascribe undue honor either to the angels or to idols, thus detracting from the glory of the one true God. He convicts the heathen nations of manifest infatuation, upon the ground that their gods are vanity and nought, for such is the meaning of the Hebrew word אלילים, elilim, 79 which is here applied to idols in contempt. The Psalmist's great point is to show, that as the Godhead is really and truly to be found in none but the one Maker of the world, those religions are vain and contemptible which corrupt the pure worship of him. Some may ask, Are angels then to be accounted nothing and vanity, merely because many have been deceived in thinking them gods? I would reply, that we do injury to the angels when we give them that honor which is due to God only; and, while we are not on this account to hold that they are nothing in themselves, yet whatever imaginary glory has been attached to them must go for nothing. 80 But the Psalmist has in his eye the gross delusions of the heathen, who impiously fashioned gods to themselves.
Before refuting their absurd notions, he very properly remarks of God that he is great, and greatly to be praised - insinuating that his glory as the infinite One far excels any which they dreamt of as attaching to their idols. We cannot but notice the confidence with which the Psalmist asserts the glory of the true God, in opposition to the universal opinion which men might entertain. The people of God were at that time called to maintain a conflict of no inconsiderable or common description with the hosts and prodigious mass of superstitions which then filled the whole world. The true God might be said to be confined within the obscure corner of Judea. Jupiter was the god every where received - and adored throughout the whole of Asia, Europe, and Africa. Every country had its own gods peculiar to itself, but these were not unknown in other parts, and it was the true God only who was robbed of that glory which belonged to him. All the world had conspired to believe a lie. Yet the Psalmist, sensible that the vain delusions of men could derogate nothing from the glory of the one God, 81 looks down with indifference upon the opinion and universal suffrage of mankind. The inference is plain, that we must not conclude that to be necessarily the true religion which meets with the approbation of the multitude; for the judgment formed by the Psalmist must have fallen to the ground at once, if religion were a thing to be determined by the suffrages of men, and his worship depended upon their caprice. Be it then that ever so many agree in error, we shall insist after the Holy Ghost that they cannot take from God's glory; for man is vanity himself, and all that comes of him is to be mistrusted. 82 Having asserted the greatness of God, he proves it by reference to the formation of the world, which reflects his perfections. 83 God must necessarily exist of himself, and be self-sufficient, which shows the vanity of all gods who made not the world. The heavens are mentioned - a part for the whole - as the power of God is principally apparent in them, when we consider their beauty and adornment.

6 Strength and honor are before him I translate the Hebrew word הוד, hod, by strength, and think those interpreters who render it glory have not duly considered the context. It is evident that the next member of the verse is a repetition, and there it reads, Power and Glory are in his sanctuary. The Psalmist means that we cannot be said to know God if we have not discovered that there is in him an incomparable glory and majesty. He first takes notice of his power and strength, as that in which his glory consists. There, as God is invisible, he directs the thoughts of his people to the sanctuary, which we have already seen to be the symbol of his presence. Such is the weakness of our minds that we rise with difficulty to the contemplation of his glory in the heavens. The Psalmist reminds us that we have no reason to say that his glory is obscure, since there were emblems of his presence in the temple, the sacrifices, and the ark of the covenant. Let us endeavor, when we make mention of God, to conceive of this glory which shines before him - otherwise, if we do not apprehend his power, it is rather a dead than a living God whom we worship. 84
Psalm 96:7-9
7. Give to Jehovah, O ye assemblies of peoples! give to Jehovah glory and strength. 85 8. Give to Jehovah the glory of his name; bring an offering, 86 and come into his courts. 9. Worship before Jehovah in the beauty of the sanctuary; 87 let the whole earth tremble before his face.

7 Give to Jehovah, etc. Since praise waited for God in Zion, (Ps 65:1,) and that was the place devoted to the celebration of his worship, and the posterity of Abraham were alone invested with the privilege of priesthood, we cannot doubt that the Psalmist refers here to that great change which was to take place in the Church upon the advent of Christ. An opposition or distinction is intended between God's ancient people and the Gentile tribes, which were to be afterwards adopted into the same fellowship. To declare his glory and strength, is the same with declaring the glory of his strength And to show that man can boast nothing of his own, and in refusing to celebrate God, impiously despoils him of his just honors, he subjoins, Give unto the Lord the glory of his name; an expression which denotes that God borrows nothing from without, but comprehends all that is worthy of praise in himself. He calls upon the Gentile nations in so many words to render unto God the same worship which the Jews did; not that we must worship God now according to the outward ritual which was prescribed under the Law, but he signifies that there would be one rule and form of religion in which all nations should accord. Now, unless the middle wall of partition had been broken down, the Gentiles could not have entered along with God's children into the courts of the sanctuary. So that we have here a clear prediction of the calling of the Gentiles, who needed to have their uncleanness taken away before they could be brought into the holy assembly. The mincha, or oblation, was only one kind of sacrifice, but it is here taken to denote the whole worship of God, because it was a part of divine service more ordinarily practiced. We see from this, and other passages, that the inspired penmen describe the inward worship of God under symbols common in the age when they lived. God would not have meat-offerings presented to him after Christ had come; but the words which the Psalmist employs intimate that the doors of the temple, once shut, were now to be opened for the admission of the Gentiles. The Apostle, in his Epistle to the Hebrews, (Heb 13:15) tells us what are those sacrifices with which God will now be worshipped. Hence the absurdity of the Papists, who would adduce such passages in support of the mass and their other fooleries. We may very properly learn from the words, however, that we ought not to come empty-handed into the presence of God, enjoined as we are to present ourselves and all that we have as a reasonable service unto Him, (Ro 12:1; 1Pe 2:5.)

9 Worship before Jehovah The Psalmist prosecutes the same train of sentiment. In requiring oblations of his people, God was not to be considered as standing in need of the services of the creature, but as giving them an opportunity of professing their faith. The true reason, therefore, is here mentioned why the oblation was enjoined, That his people might prostrate themselves before him, and acknowledge that they and all belonging to them were his. Mention is made of the beauty of the temple, referring to the fact that the Gentiles should be raised to a new honor, in being associated into one body with God's chosen people. 88 At the time when this psalm was written, it was generally deemed scarcely credible that the heathen nations would be admitted into the temple in company with the holy seed of Abraham. This should make us think all the more highly of our calling as Gentiles, which seemed then so incredible and impracticable a thing. We may be convinced that God only could have opened for us the door of salvation. The beauty of the temple is an expression intended to beget a reverential view of the temple, that men may approach it with humble fear, instead of rushing without consideration into God's presence. The clause which follows in the verse is inserted for the same purpose - tremble before his face, intimating that we should prostrate ourselves as suppliants before him when we consider his awful majesty. Not that he would deter worshippers from drawing near to God. They should esteem it their greatest pleasure and enjoyment to seek his face. But he would have us humbled to the right and serious worship of God. I may add, that the beauty or glory of the sanctuary did not consist in silver and gold, in the preciousness of the material of which it was made, nor in polished stones, nor in any splendor and decoration of this kind, but in the representation of the heavenly pattern which was shown to Moses on the mount, (Ex 25:9.)
Psalm 96:10-13
10. Say among the heathen, Jehovah reigneth; also the world shall be established, it shall not be moved: he shall judge the peoples 89 in righteousness, [literally, in righteousnesses.] 11. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea thunder, and the fullness thereof. 12. Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein; likewise let all the trees of the wood rejoice. 90 13. Before Jehovah; for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth. 91

10. Say among the heathen, Jehovah reigneth His language again implies that it is only where God rules and presides that he can be worshipped. The Gentiles could not possibly profess the worship of God, so long as his throne was only in the small corner of Judea, and they were not acknowledging his government. Accordingly, the Psalmist speaks of his extending his kingdom to all parts of the world, with the view of gathering unto himself in one, those who had formerly been divided and scattered. The expression, Say among the heathen, signifies that God would enlarge the boundaries of his kingdom by his word and doctrine. What is said of the world being established, is particularly worthy of our observation. So far as the order of nature is concerned, we know that it has been Divinely established, and fixed from the beginning; that the same sun, moon, and stars, continue to shine in heaven; that the wicked and the unbelieving are sustained with food, and breathe the vital air, just as do the righteous. Still we are to remember that so long as un-godliness has possession of the minds of men, the world, plunged as it is in darkness, must be considered as thrown into a state of confusion, and of horrible disorder and misrule; for there can be no stability apart from God. The world is very properly here said therefore to be established, that it should not shake, when men are brought back into a state of subjection to God. We learn this truth from the passage, That though all the creatures should be discharging their various offices, no order can be said to prevail in the world, until God erect his throne and reign amongst men. What more monstrous disorder can be conceived of, than exists where the Creator himself is not acknowledged? Wicked and unbelieving men may be satisfied with their own condition, but it is necessarily most insecure, most unstable; and destitute as they are of any foundation in God, their life may be said to hang by a thread. 92 We are to recollect what we have seen taught, (Ps 46:5) "God is in the midst of the holy city, she shall not be moved." Very possibly there may be an indirect allusion to the imperfect and uncompleted state of things under the Law, and a contrast may have been intended between the perfect condition of things which should obtain under Christ, and the prelude to it under the former period. Next he predicts that the kingdom to be introduced should be distinguished by righteousness, according to what we have seen, (Ps 45:6) "A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom." The term judging, in the Hebrew, includes government of any kind. If God's method of governing men be to form and regulate their lives to righteousness, we may infer, that however easily men may be satisfied with themselves, all is necessarily wrong with them, till they have been made subject to Christ. And this righteousness of which the Psalmist speaks has not reference merely to the outward actions. It comprehends a new heart, commencing as it does in the regeneration of the Spirit, by which we are formed again into the likeness of God.

11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad. With the view of giving us a more exalted conception of the display of God's goodness in condescending to take all men under his government, the Psalmist calls upon the irrational things themselves, the trees, the earth, the seas, and the heavens, to join in the general joy. Nor are we to understand that by the heavens he means the angels, and by the earth men; 93 for he calls even upon the dumb fishes of the deep to shout for joy. The language must therefore be hyperbolical, designed to express the desirableness and the blessedness of being brought unto the faith of God. At the same time, it denotes to us that God does not reign with terror, or as a tyrant, but that his power is exercised sweetly, and so as to diffuse joy amongst his subjects. The wicked may tremble when his kingdom is introduced, but the erection of it is only the cause of their fear indirectly. 94 We might notice also, that the hyperbole here employed does not want a certain foundation of a more literal kind. As all elements in the creation groan and travail together with us, according to Paul's declaration, (Ro 8:22) they may reasonably rejoice in the restoration of all things according to their earnest desire. The words teach us how infatuated that joy is, which is wantonly indulged in by men who are without God. From the close of the psalm, we learn that it is impossible to experience the slightest measure of true joy, as long as we have not seen the face of God, Rejoice before the Lord, because he cometh And if the very sea and land mourn so long as God is absent, may we not ask what shall become of us, who are properly the subjects of God's dreadful curse? The Psalmist, to remove all doubt regarding an event which might seem incredible, repeats his assertion of it, and states, at the same time, in what that rectitude consists, which he had formerly mentioned, when he adds, that God shall govern the world with righteousness and truth. This shows us that it is only by the light of God's righteousness and truth that the wickedness and hypocrisy of men can be removed and dispelled.

"And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons; Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children."
Deuteronomy 4:8-10

Our Family & the Joy of History
History. Now that is a boring subject right? Growing up in the anti-God setting of public school, history was a very dull subject of little more than dates and names. And what was the point of wasting time studying it. Well, anyone who has allowed God to be acknowledged in history knows the wonderful, amazing work of Him in the world. And this is when history becomes alive and useful.
For our family, the study of history started when someone told me that I looked like Jeb Stuart on a Civil war movie. Hmmm. . . Maybe I will watch that, I thought. In watching the movie, I was amazed to see the faith in God of these men. Particularly Stonewall Jackson and General Lee. My wife and I were so intrigued by the faith of these men, we had to get more books and documentaries on the Civil war. We were more and more amazed to see the working of God in these men's lives. We began to realize that history is the story of God working in peoples lives. We further began to study church history with the reformation and puritans and were similarly amazed. And then through the hearing of some tapes on the founding of this country, we learned of the godly heritage of the founding of this country. Which brought confusion and amazement, looking at the state of things as they are now in this country.
When I read quotes of our founding fathers or read biographies of their lives, I find myself being very humbled and disgusted with my own selfish life. And upset with the state of this country and it's encouragement to self-seeking. Our founding fathers gave everything for the benefits that we have today. And we do little more than complain at what we are not getting. And the majority of these men were not just religious, but had a firm foundation in the God of the Bible and a faith in the work of Christ for their salvation.

If you have been with us for some time you will know that our whole family has been desirous that he would be able to be trained in seminary. Several years ago he was getting set up to study nursing as it would give great flexiblity to our schedule and homeschooling, but he was so hesitant. When his loving wife asked why he did not want to study nursing, he responded that he could see no thing worth so great a benefit to himself and his family than to study the ways of the Lord. Our hearts were then knit as a family on the subject. And here we stand years later in much gratitude for the opportunity to go. Please pray that our home will benefit from his attendance and that he will manage his home well as is required of an elder.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Founder's FaithFisher Ames "Should not the Bible regain the place it once held as a schoolbook? It's morals are pure, its examples are captivating and noble... The reverence for the sacred book that is thus early impressed lasts long; and, probably, if not impressed in infancy, never takes firm hold of the mind... In no Book is there so good English, so pure and so elegant, and by teaching all the same they will speak alike, and the Bible will justly remain the standard of language as well as of faith." Contest Ending Tonight & Our Start of Blogging

Here goes the beginning of our blogging time. A big thank you to Kim at http://inashoe.com/ for having such a neat contest that our Lord would spur us on to start this blog! :)

We'll start out with the rules for the contest, our family's submission and finally what you all can expect on the blog here!

The contest is for $250 worth of Vision Forum Products, 3 winners will be chosen.

The rules follow (from http://inashoe.com/):

"Here we go:
Get your new catalog - if you’re not on the mailing list, get on it now. No time to get it? Download the new 2008 Vision Forum catalog as a PDF here.
Flip through the pages, oohing and aahing over all the wonderful items, new and old. Note which ones are published by Vision Forum - you’ll see a VF logo near the title of the item. Try not to drool on it; you’ll be needing your catalog for the next step.
Now the fun part: Put together your own dream order of $250 or less of VF published items and post it to your blog with a link to Vision Forum and a link to this post. Yes, the stakes have been raised!
Leave me a comment here with a link to your post so I’ll know you entered. No entry without a valid link will be eligible. One entry per household, please, and if you won last time you already had your fun. Save some for others.
We will close entries this Friday (November 2) at 11:59 PM, CST and will choose 3 winners to receive all of the items on their wishlist!"

Take some time and visit http://inashoe.com/ and Vision Forum.

Here is our family entry: We hope you will learn a bit about some great products from Vision Forum and our family as you read.

  • Our daughter Hattush was so very excited to see the Baby Doll Carrier ($14). She really enjoys caring for her babies and will make a super Mama as she grows in the grace of the Lord and matures!

  • Missionary Heroism ($24) Our family loves biographies of godly men and women. We were so moved by the autobiography of John G. Paton and expect these stories to be treasured just as much!

  • "That looks like Daddy!" That is what Hattush says each time she see a picture of Stonewall Jackson. Christ in the Camp ($25) would be a treat for this family! We are amazed and humbled at the godly men of the Civil War.

  • Again, history is amazing to our family, as we see God's Providential hand at work! Our next choice would be A Comprehensive Defense of the Providence of God in the Founding of America ($125)

  • A Church in the House ($12) by Mathew Henry. I have been looking for this for quite some time! Yippie! Thank you to Vision Forum for making this available.

  • Again, we have enjoyed history and hense our next pick... Providential Battles II ($25). We have the first set and so enjoy them!

  • And lastly, you've guess it, history again! Sabers, Spears and Catapults ($25) As our family is studying our way through the scriptures in family worship and are in I Samuel currently, we thought we would all benefit from these lectures.

So here we have our family's wish list amounting to $250.

Now a little about our family and what to expect here on this blog.

We are the Reschly Family: Eric, Trish, Hattush and Jehosheba (praying still for more wee blessings!) We own an online shop called Adorned with Modesty. This will likely develop into a blog for the shop detailing special offers and giveaways. We cannot promise they will be quite so grand as this lovely contest, but we pray they will be greatly profitable to your family in your loving service to our Great Lord and King, Jehovah.

If you would like to visit our shop you may at: http://www.adornedwithmodesty.com/

We may also post a little more personal side of our family and information on our journey to Seminary as a family. It is nearing time. Our Lord has been so gracious to grant our family the desire to see Eric in Seminary for several years and at the end of the month- should our Lord sustain our family and bring us out by his good pleasure- we plan to go to Pittsburgh. Eric is looking to attend RPTS. We thank you all for your support and love!

Sincerely,

The Reschly Family
