"And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons; Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children."
Deuteronomy 4:8-10
Our Family & the Joy of History
History. Now that is a boring subject right? Growing up in the anti-God setting of public school, history was a very dull subject of little more than dates and names. And what was the point of wasting time studying it. Well, anyone who has allowed God to be acknowledged in history knows the wonderful, amazing work of Him in the world. And this is when history becomes alive and useful.
For our family, the study of history started when someone told me that I looked like Jeb Stuart on a Civil war movie. Hmmm. . . Maybe I will watch that, I thought. In watching the movie, I was amazed to see the faith in God of these men. Particularly Stonewall Jackson and General Lee. My wife and I were so intrigued by the faith of these men, we had to get more books and documentaries on the Civil war. We were more and more amazed to see the working of God in these men's lives. We began to realize that history is the story of God working in peoples lives. We further began to study church history with the reformation and puritans and were similarly amazed. And then through the hearing of some tapes on the founding of this country, we learned of the godly heritage of the founding of this country. Which brought confusion and amazement, looking at the state of things as they are now in this country.
When I read quotes of our founding fathers or read biographies of their lives, I find myself being very humbled and disgusted with my own selfish life. And upset with the state of this country and it's encouragement to self-seeking. Our founding fathers gave everything for the benefits that we have today. And we do little more than complain at what we are not getting. And the majority of these men were not just religious, but had a firm foundation in the God of the Bible and a faith in the work of Christ for their salvation.
Seminary Sale: November 14th-16th
We are so very thankful for the Lord's direction and leading us to Pittsburgh, PA. for Eric to begin seminary. If you have been with us for some time you will know that our whole family has been desirous that he would be able to be trained in seminary. Several years ago he was getting set up to study nursing as it would give great flexiblity to our schedule and homeschooling, but he was so hesitant. When his loving wife asked why he did not want to study nursing, he responded that he could see no thing worth so great a benefit to himself and his family than to study the ways of the Lord. Our hearts were then knit as a family on the subject. And here we stand years later in much gratitude for the opportunity to go. Please pray that our home will benefit from his attendance and that he will manage his home well as is required of an elder.
We ask also that you join in our happiness and help us to lighten our load for moving. We hadn't intented to have another sale so soon. National Day of Thanksgiving, Oct. 3, 1789
George Washington
Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Founder's FaithFisher Ames "Should not the Bible regain the place it once held as a schoolbook? It's morals are pure, its examples are captivating and noble... The reverence for the sacred book that is thus early impressed lasts long; and, probably, if not impressed in infancy, never takes firm hold of the mind... In no Book is there so good English, so pure and so elegant, and by teaching all the same they will speak alike, and the Bible will justly remain the standard of language as well as of faith."
